About Dr. Eugene C. Strobel

Gene was a dear friend of Wayne State University and the Junior Year in Munich, who worked tirelessly to promote the study of German and German-American friendship in Michigan.

As president and founder of the German-American Heritage Foundation International (GAHFI), Gene had many dreams. Into six short years of the Foundation's existence, he packed a lifetime of passion, ideas, and relentless energy to:

Promote the study of the German language at all levels;

Educate students about the German-American experience, Detroit's German-American heritage, and Michigan's business & trade connections with Germany;

Encourage students to study and seek internships in Germany,

Motivate them to pursue career opportunities which engage German-American cooperation.

But among the many accomplishments of his Foundation, Gene's greatest gift was his ability to bring people together. He dreamed of building bridges between the high schools and universities, between academia and the business world, between young and old, and between the various communities which make up the diverse ethnic tapestry of southeastern Michigan -- and he made it happen.

The Purpose of the Scholarship Fund

In recognition of Gene's passionate work to strengthen German-American partnerships on all fronts, the Junior Year in Munich (JYM) at Wayne State University has established a permanent tribute equal in scope to his many dreams: The Eugene C. Strobel Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The Eugene C. Strobel Memorial Scholarship Fund will be used to provide scholarship assistance to college students from across the US who have been accepted to Wayne State's Junior Year in Munich program.

The Need for this Scholarship Fund

Scholarship assistance is greatly needed to support deserving students who will make up the next generation of German-American leaders. Today it costs approximately $20,000 for a student to study in Germany for a year.

Many alumni of the JYM program pursue career paths which engage German-American relations.

The Eugene C. Strobel Memorial Scholarship Fund provides a most-needed investment in the future sustainability of productive German-American cooperation and understanding.

Annual Fundraising Goal

The Fund will be maintained through annual gift-giving pledges from a combination of corporate and individual sponsors.

Wayne State University is tax-exempt under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code; donations to the Eugene C. Strobel Memorial Scholarship Fund are tax-deductible as allowable by law.

Our goal is to achieve a total of $60,000 in combined annual pledge commitments to The Eugene C. Strobel Memorial Scholarship Fund, thus making it possible to distribute (15) fifteen $4000 scholarships each year to students who hope to study in Munich for the entire academic year.
