Heinz
Prechter Tribute Scholarships
The
"Heinz Prechter Tribute Scholarships" are sponsored
and administered by the Michigan Chapter of the German American Chamber
of Commerce of the Midwest, and provide financial support to students
from Michigan who have been offered an internship in Germany by a German
company.
Named
after the Heinz C. Prechter (1942-2001), chairman and founder of American
Sunroof Corporation (ASC), the "Heinz Prechter Tribute Scholarships"
commemorate the unparalleled contribution that Mr. Prechter made to
the advancement of international relations between Michigan and Germany.
The purpose of the scholarships is to encourage more Michigan students
to learn about German business, life and culture by living and working
in Germany.
Scholarship
recipients are selected through an application and interview process
open to all interested students who are currently enrolled in good standing
at a public or private college or university in Michigan, who have attained
at least junior-class status, and who possess German language proficiency
adequate to the meet the requirements of their overseas assignment.
Application Instructions
Each
scholarship applicant must submit in writing the following documents:
Letter
of Application: The letter should provide in narrative form a description
of the applicant's qualifications including, for example, academic background,
employment history, special interests, accomplishments and awards, international
travel, and a statement indicating why the applicant wants to work as
an intern in Germany.
Resume:
The resume should provide in outline form a description of the applicant's
qualifications including, for example, academic background, employment
history, special interests, accomplishments and awards, and international
travel.
Offer-of-Internship
Letter: The letter (written in German or English) must be addressed
to the applicant by the company in Germany that is sponsoring the internship,
and must adequately describe the work assignment (specifying, for example,
work tasks, the beginning and ending of calendar dates of the assignment,
salary, etc,). The letter must be written on the company's letterhead
and signed by an appropriate company official.
Letters
of Recommendation: The applicant must provide letters of recommendation
from at least two faculty members (at the institution in which the applicant
is currently enrolled) who teach in the applicant's major or minor fields
of study.
Course
Transcripts: The applicant must provide comprehensive course transcripts
of all academic semesters completed at institutions of higher education.
Please
note: Scholarship recipients must agree to submit to the Chamber
(at or near completion of their assignment) written reports on their
internships, and (if schedules permit) to give oral presentations on
their internships at Chamber meetings. These reports and presentations
will give the students an opportunity to describe in detail the activities
and outcomes of their internship assignments, and will provide the Chamber
a basis on which it can evaluate the results of its financial support.
Student Selection Criteria
The
selection of scholarship recipients will be based on the following criteria,
which are stated as minimum requirements for qualification. The students
who are selected to receive scholarships will be those who are judged
to have the best overall evaluations with respect to these criteria.
Academic
Status: Applicants must be students in good standing at a public
or private college or university in Michigan; must have attained at
least junior-class status; must have completed at least two semesters
of study at the institutions in which they are currently enrolled; and
must have a grade point average of at least B or its equivalent.
Language
Proficiency: Applicants must have good working proficiency in German,
at least adequate to meet the professional requirements of their internship
assignments.
Work
Experience: Applicants must have completed at least six months of
successful, practical work (in any area of employment) before their
internship assignments are to begin.
Personal
Characteristics: Applicants must be sufficiently mature to meet
the requirements of their internship assignments and the challenges
of living in a foreign country. Typically, the personal characteristics
that reflect this kind of maturity are, for example, responsibility,
determination, capability for hard work, stability under pressure, flexibility,
adaptability, sensitivity to cultural differences, patience, an even
temper, good listening skills, self reliance, independence, and resourcefulness.

Applicants
must submit a complete written application, consisting of a letter of
application, a resume, an offer-of-internship, two letters of recommendation,
and comprehensive course transcripts.
