About
German Bridge
German
Bridge began several years ago as a dream of uniting two related, yet
hitherto un-connected, realities. Business
and trade connections between Germany and Michigan were accelerating.
Our Junior Year in Munich had been preparing students with the intercultural
skills and experiences needed to become globally competent for more
than 50 years.
What
if we were to build a new bridge of understanding and cooperation between
the world of academia and the world of business? As an initiative developed
by a study abroad program within a college of liberal arts, how would
such an effort be received within the business community, and what might
be its chances for success?
Working
closely with Prof. Dallas Kenny, who was simultaneously developing a
World Bridge Foreign Language Technology Center
initiative, the director of the Junior Year in Munich, Prof.
Mark Ferguson, began work on designing the unique features of German
Bridge - die neue Brücke that could build upon JYM's 50
year presence in Munich.
The
dream of building a new German Bridge has become reality. Today, German
Bridge brings together people from previously unconnected disciplines
and professions who share a common interest in strengthening German-American
relations through education, student exchange, and mutually beneficial
partnership building.
With
the creation of the German Bridge initiative in Detroit, as well as
the completion of the German Bridge
Conference Center, new forms of cooperation on both sides of the
Atlantic are now possible through German
Bridge Partnerships.
As
new constellations of synergies and partnerships emerge within a new
Europe, Wayne State's new German Bridge promises to become a central
gathering place and resource center for people who share a common interest
in strong German-American relations in a changing world.
